BuddyTV -Oscar Dahl, BuddyTV Senior Writer

Tonight, Sylvia Kwan, the 52 year old architect from California, was the third contestant voted off of Survivor: Fiji. Sylvia had been grinding on her tribe mates since the very first day on the island. Sylvia established herself as a “leader” right away, leading the construction of the nice camp. Even then, her aggressive style of leadership wasn’t too appreciated by the other members of the tribe.

Sylvia’s stay in Fiji had to be disappointing, with her heading to Exile Island twice in her brief time on the island. After receiving the third clue to the location of the immunity idol, Sylvia attempted to look for what would’ve been her saving grace, but to no avail. Her attempts to find the idol became blatant as she neared tribal council, Sylvia finally resorting to digging with everyone around watching.

Sylvia likely sealed her fate with poor showings in both of the challenges. The first was a slip and slide/basketball competition for the tribes choice of reward. Sylvia’s slip and slide skills leave a lot to be desired. You can read about in our full recap coming tomorrow morning, but just know it took her a long, long time to get down that slip and slide track.

By the end, it wasn’t really a question. Sylvia didn’t get along with her tribe, she didn’t bring a lot to the table in the challenges, and therefore, she was voted out.

Survivor Fiji Recap - Erica Goes Home, not Silvia…

February 15th, 2007

www.tvgrapevine.com by honeySC

On day four Moto feels fortunate to be living comfortably. They have a plush couch, pillows, two hammocks, silverware. Boo, laying in a hammock, says that they have salted rice, lemonade, and fresh mango to munch on. They feel full and think this might be the first Survivor where you actually gain weight. Ravu, on the other hand, is in rather bad shape. They have no water, and have been rubbing sticks until they are worn out, with no success. They are drinking coconut water, and Yau Man says that with a bad knife it is taking a long time to do that. They say that they are so beat that they are chopping five coconuts and then taking a nap for several hours. They are eating clams off the ground complains Rocky. On Moto, Boo has caught something on his eye and they run water over it in hopes of helping it. The tribe worries about Boo who is chopping with an axe and gets his finger through to his knee. Dreamz says that Boo is a hazard to himself and they can see that they won’t have to vote anyone out, because Boo will hurt himself out of the game. He even makes a hammock collapse and falls on the ground. Moto jokes about it, but they are concerned for his proclivity to injury. More… »

Survivor: Fiji - Episode 2 Quick Thoughts

BuddyTV

Survivor: Fiji returns tonight with its second episode, which means its the first real episode. No more introductions, just pure Survivor. Questions for the night: How lazy will the tribe in the nice camp get? Will the immunity challenge determine who goes to what camp? Well, lets find out. These are my quick, spur of the moment thoughts while watching tonights episode.

Ravu, the tribe in the “poor” camp, has resorted to licking leaves for water. Sad, just sad. I cant really blame them for being in bad shape. I dont know what Id do with no water, no fire and only a machete.

Lisi, who we heard nothing from last episode, seems to be quite a character.

The nice camp is really, really nice. Hammocks, pillows, food. Ive camped in worse conditions.

Boo lets loose a vicious fart. Thought you’d like to know. More… »

Reality Check: Survivor: Fiji: onward

Reality Check: Survivor: Fiji: onward by Sarah Kickler

Things that jumped out at me during the second episode of Survivor: Fiji:

There are still so many people, I cant keep them straight. That will change soon enough.

Ravu is so desperate for water its day four, after all that they are licking leaves with condensation on them. Ow.

Moto, on the other hand, is living it up with hammocks, pillows, silverware, a shower

Lisi seems like she could be on the verge of being really annoying with her cartoon voices and sometimes-exuberant attitude.

When oh when will people learn to build a fire before they get on the show? You would be the HERO More… »

Survivor producer Mark Burnett speaks at Oaks Christian symposium

www.toacorn.com By Sophia Fischer sfischer@theacorn.com

Americans have lost their “sense of culture,” according to reality TV producer Mark Burnett, who spoke during a recent daylong symposium at Oaks Christian School in Westlake Village. In relationships, Americans get right down to business rather than taking time to get to know others first, said Burnett, creator of the “Survivor” series.

“It’s become all about the deal,” Burnett said.

In spending time with various cultures, Burnett found a genuine interest in others that he no longer sees in the United States. In many countries Burnett has visited, people are “just trying to get food and shelter for themselves” but stop whatever they’re doing to offer their hospitality to visitors.

“They’d have been offended if I approached with a business sense immediately,” Burnett said. “They want to converse first.”

Burnett’s appearance at Oaks Christian was part of an annual event the school sponsors to expose students to other lifestyles and cultures. This year’s symposium, “Lifelines: Celebration of Culture,” focused on race and prejudice. More… »

‘Survivor’ winner still holding on to his money

February 14th, 2007

MSNBC.com

Q: For the first time, I enjoyed a reality tv show. Yul on “Survivor” was great. My pick all the way for his actions. What is he doing with his money? —Jo, California

A: Andy says: Yul Kwon is the 13th millionaire minted by “Survivor,” and he impressed everyone with his game play and strategizing.

After receiving his check on The Early Show, Yul told AOL that he will first and foremost use the money “to provide [his parents] with some things they werent able to [have] on their own,” because they “came over here as immigrants and didnt have a lot of money. They made a lot of sacrifices to provide opportunities for me and my brother.”

He also said, though, that he’d like “to use the money and my position right now to try to serve my community and do socially constructive things with it.”

Hes not yet announced any plans for charity or similar work, although hes expressed an interest in advocacy for bone marrow donor registration. He did similar work in college to help a friend who later died of leukemia.

But for now, Kwon isnt going to run out and spend it all right away. As Yul told the New York Times, “I plan on sitting on the money for a while so I can get my feet on the ground. I don’t want to be rash about it.”

Gael says: According to this article in the Fayetteville Observer, Yul is “contemplating buying a hybrid car.” He also had laser eye surgery, as did his fellow “Survivor: Cook Islands” contestant Becky. They both had the procedure done by Dr. Michael Woodcock, father of yet another “Survivor” from their season, Candice.

Survivor Winner Helps Bay Area Cancer Patient

cbs5.com - Survivor Winner Helps Bay Area Cancer Patient Sue Kwon

CBS 5 DANVILLE Bay Area native and Survivor Cook Islands winner Yul Kwon is trying to save the life of another Bay Area man.

Barry Foon is a 46-year old husband and father of two little girls. He is fighting non-Hodgkins lymphoma and so far, chemotherapy has not worked in stopping the cancer — so he desperately needs a bone marrow donor.

Foon lives in Danville and hes a Fairfield native and graduate of Sacramento State.

Several donor drives all over the Bay Area have not turned up a perfect DNA match.

Kwon donated $50,000 to the Asian American Donor Program to continue their efforts in finding a DNA match. Kwon lost his college roommate to leukemia. More… »

Survivor Bombshell: Fiji’s “Babe” Reveals Why She Bailed!

February 10th, 2007

www.tvguide.com by Ileane Rudolph

She was going to be one of those Survivor babes. You know, the kind who uses her beauty and her cleavage to help her stick around on the island. Only 28-year-old Melissa McNulty didn’t even make it to the first Tribal Council. The night before filming of the CBS series’ new season (premiering Thursday at 8 pm/ET) began, the West Hollywood talent manager became the first player to quit. (At least Pearl Island’s Osten and Palau’s Janu survived a few challenges.) Melissa’s exit left the producers with their own challenge: Since there were no alternates on hand, what to do with the odd number of players? “It played out just fine,” host Jeff Probst said in a recent press conference. TV Guide spoke to Melissa on the eve of Survivor: Fiji’s debut.

TV Guide: Why did you quit when you had already made it so far, out of all the thousands who applied?

Melissa McNulty: Doing Survivor was a huge challenge for me. Everybody who goes on the show has different reasons and goals. Part of mine was that I suffered from panic attacks, and I thought, “What better way to face that challenge?” I was there in Fiji for almost two weeks before I took myself out of the game and came back to Los Angeles.

TV Guide: What triggered your panic attacks? Was it the prospect of being hungry, wet, dirty and full of bug bites? More… »

Survivor Talk with Jessica deBen

iVillage.com

No one wants to be the first one kicked off Survivor, but 27-year-old fashion stylist Jessica deBen seems to be taking it all in stride. See what she thought about her three short days on the island and the 18 other people she shared it with. And am I the only one, or does her answer to my question about how it felt to be kicked off in the moment seem wierd? Just something I picked up later.

Come meet Jessica…

Shireese: So how does it feel to be the first one voted off?

Jessica: Not as bad as I thought.

Shireese: Oh OK.

Jessica: I thought it would be like hell on earth to watch it on TV, but I was sitting at the bar with my Mom, drinking martinis kinda laughing like, “look what a goofball I can’t believe I did that.”

Its haves vs. hungry have-nots on Survivor: Fiji

SouthFlorida.com
Its haves vs. hungry have-nots on Survivor: Fiji

Survivor: Fiji could be settled almost as soon as it starts. At least it will be made to seem that way.

The enduringly popular reality competition regularly tweaks the rules to keep the concept fresh. The twist for the 14th season will create a confrontation of haves and have-nots as stark as Palm Beach swells vs. the hopelessly homeless.

The winner of the first challenge will be given what amounts to a beachfront paradise.

“It will be the biggest house-warming gift ever,” host Jeff Probst said. Included will be comfortable furniture and bedding, kitchen equipment and an embarrassing bounty of food. One of the winners remarks that the tribes members have more to eat than some of the people watching, according to Probst. More… »

Fashion Stylist Jessica 1st Off Survivor: Fiji

cbs5.com

CBS “Survivor: Fiji,” the 14th installment of the Emmy Award-winning reality series, premiered Thursday on CBS with 19 new castaways competing for the $1 million prize.

The first task of the season required the diverse group to work as one to construct an elaborate shelter complete with a kitchen, bathroom and living quarters.

But a map that lead to a stockpile of supplies had some unnerved. “Ive never seen where people come on Survivor have this much,” Erica, a 27-year-old fundraiser for non-profit organizations, said. “Im really nervous, because I think a curve ball is coming. It’s too easy.” More… »

With team Moto living in luxury while team Ravu faces the elements armed with just a pot and a machete, things could get ugly.

The producers of Survivor were sad to learn that the hottest girl was voted off first.

Hello, good people, and welcome to the 14th season of the reality mega-hit Survivor. First off, let me say that again, “14th season” Who’d a thunk that this little experiment would have lasted seven years and 14 seasons? I know I wouldn’t have.

Since Im not sure how much will get covered in the first episode, I’m going to throw out a few things Ive picked up from Jeffs interviews recently and some articles Ive read over the last couple weeks. Cindys Scoop on Survivor

News Tribune By Cynthia Rolando lifestyle@newstrib.com

After 14 seasons, it seems there’s not going to be much to knock “Survivor” totally off its perch. After nearly 10 episodes in the top 10, it still consistently ranks in the top 20. Not bad for a show which spawned a whole new era of television. More… »
