This is an interesting idea. I’ve always respected Richard for winning the first one. He’s alway said that he was playing the game while the others were worried about being friends and getting along and getting emotional and all of that drama. He played the game. I’d concede that Boston Rob was very good, maybe the best, but Richard was the first. He taught us all how the game was played.
I was amazed watching All Stars to see the difference between Rudy then and how he did in All Stars. He was a great guy, but way too honest. The game has gotten down and dirty and passed him by. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, only that it’s changed. I was very disappointed in Ian for throwing the last game because his friends were more important to him. What a loser. You want to play the game? Then play the game. You want friends? Stay in college. This game is not for the faint of heart. Nice guys finish last. It’s all a matter of priorities.
Richard was not the “best”, but he was very definitely the “first”, in many ways. He showed us all how the game is played.

Observation #2: Richard Hatch Is Not the Greatest Survivor of All Time
As I’ve already pointed out, Kelly Wigglesworth should’ve been the winner of Survivor Season 1. But the greatest Survivor of all time has got to be Boston Rob. I’m not going to argue that point here, though. My point here is to argue that Richard Hatch is not the greatest, so here’s why: Watching Season 1, I now know what a cake walk Hatch had the entire time. He was the only person who really had a clue of how to “play the game,” forming his alliance quickly which took him through the game from beginning to end. The other person who had a clue was Kelly, and she played the game brilliantly?á?í?ìand she kicked butt on the challenges (unlike Rich, who gave up on the final immunity challenge and was just lucky to even get chosen by Kelly to be in the final two!). Rich was also lucky to be “up against” (in quotes because they really weren’t much competition for him, or anyone) guys like Sean (idiot!) and Gervace (clueless!), and in cahoots with a guy like Rudy (completely loyal to the very end).
Besides his unreal luck, Rich’s accomodations on the island were so much more plush than what later Survivors had to endure, which brings him down yet another notch.
All of this just goes to show that it wasn’t Rich’s “brilliant” strategy which helped him to win Survivor?á?í?ìit was simply the fact that he had a strategy! It’s easy to beat others when they’re not even playing the game. Sorry, Rich, you may have been the archetype Survivor, setting the original standard for “how to play the game,” but you’re not the greatest of all time. I don’t think you should’ve won, but I have enjoyed your neurotic obsession with the show. You’re very entertaining as a Survivor commentator, so I hope you get to keep that gig?á?í?ìespecially if it helps you pay off those back-taxes!
