Is there a sweatshop behind ‘Survivor’?

csmonitor.com
By Daniel B. Wood | Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor

Writers Guild of America files suit alleging that TV execs are overworking writers and editors of ‘reality’ shows.

HOLLYWOOD ?á?í?è TV writer and editor Zachary Isenberg recalls vividly the shock of his second week working on the reality TV show, “Renovate My Family.”

“We would work from about 9 a.m. to midnight, and often 2, 3, 4 a.m., and I’d be thinking, ‘Well maybe this week is just an exception,’” says the 32-year old, who says he was denied meal breaks and told to submit false time cards. “After 2-1/2 months, I found out it wasn’t.” More… »

Local women to compete on ‘Survivor 11′

Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Of the 16 people who will sweat, starve and scheme their way through the jungles and rain forests of Guatemala on “Survivor 11,” which CBS begins airing on Sept. 15, two are from the Seattle metro area.

One is 21-year-old Brianna of Edmonds, who works in retail sales and is a makeup artist. She enjoys biking and snorkeling, and her favorite sports team is the Sonics.

The other is Lydia, a 42-year-old fishmonger who lives in Lakewood and likes the Mariners. She lists her favorite outdoor activities as Dungeness crabbing and fishing.

That would have come in handy on the last island-based “Survivor,” but maybe there are some lake fish for her. The show airs locally on KIRO/7.

Natural-born survivor: Cindy Hall has always been a ?á?í?öjungle girl’

The Ledger Independent - Maysville, Kentucky
By DANETTA BARKER Staff Writer

Guatemala will be no challenge for a woman who canoes her way to work. Former Maysville resident Cindy Hall, who has just been chosen for a stint on the CBS show “Survivor: Guatemala,” is used to the hot humid life of the great outdoors.

Hall worked for 12 years at a zoo in Naples, Fla. where she had the opportunity to canoe along the backwaters to work each day, according to her mother Bonnie Hall.

“She was always very outdoorsy,” Hall said. “She canoed to work every day. That’s pretty unique.”

Hall is excited to have her daughter on a television show, not because the show is so popular, but because it has been a dream of Cindy’s since the first season of survivor. More… »

Richard Hatch Is Not the Greatest Survivor of All Time

August 25th, 2005

This is an interesting idea. I’ve always respected Richard for winning the first one. He’s alway said that he was playing the game while the others were worried about being friends and getting along and getting emotional and all of that drama. He played the game. I’d concede that Boston Rob was very good, maybe the best, but Richard was the first. He taught us all how the game was played.

Richard HatchI was amazed watching All Stars to see the difference between Rudy then and how he did in All Stars. He was a great guy, but way too honest. The game has gotten down and dirty and passed him by. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, only that it’s changed. I was very disappointed in Ian for throwing the last game because his friends were more important to him. What a loser. You want to play the game? Then play the game. You want friends? Stay in college. This game is not for the faint of heart. Nice guys finish last. It’s all a matter of priorities.

Richard was not the “best”, but he was very definitely the “first”, in many ways. He showed us all how the game is played.

RealityBlogs.com

Observation #2: Richard Hatch Is Not the Greatest Survivor of All Time

As I’ve already pointed out, Kelly Wigglesworth should’ve been the winner of Survivor Season 1. But the greatest Survivor of all time has got to be Boston Rob. I’m not going to argue that point here, though. My point here is to argue that Richard Hatch is not the greatest, so here’s why: Watching Season 1, I now know what a cake walk Hatch had the entire time. He was the only person who really had a clue of how to “play the game,” forming his alliance quickly which took him through the game from beginning to end. The other person who had a clue was Kelly, and she played the game brilliantly?á?í?ìand she kicked butt on the challenges (unlike Rich, who gave up on the final immunity challenge and was just lucky to even get chosen by Kelly to be in the final two!). Rich was also lucky to be “up against” (in quotes because they really weren’t much competition for him, or anyone) guys like Sean (idiot!) and Gervace (clueless!), and in cahoots with a guy like Rudy (completely loyal to the very end).

Besides his unreal luck, Rich’s accomodations on the island were so much more plush than what later Survivors had to endure, which brings him down yet another notch.

All of this just goes to show that it wasn’t Rich’s “brilliant” strategy which helped him to win Survivor?á?í?ìit was simply the fact that he had a strategy! It’s easy to beat others when they’re not even playing the game. Sorry, Rich, you may have been the archetype Survivor, setting the original standard for “how to play the game,” but you’re not the greatest of all time. I don’t think you should’ve won, but I have enjoyed your neurotic obsession with the show. You’re very entertaining as a Survivor commentator, so I hope you get to keep that gig?á?í?ìespecially if it helps you pay off those back-taxes!

Survivor Themed Parties and Games

August 24th, 2005

I got this email and it started me thinking. We’ve gotten requests in the past for themed party ideas and I never came up with any.

We are having a block party with the survivor theme. Can you give us any ideas for kid survivor games

Now, with your help, we might be able to help this person. Have you ever had a Survivor themed party? Can you think of a good Survivor themed game to play? for kids? for adults?

Do you have any funny thoughts about this? It seems like there’s a joke in there somewhere. Maybe related to stabbing each other in the back? Go naked on your birthday to win? I don’t know. What do you think?

Go to the forum and leave us your ideas for parties and games.

Reality rocks on DVD

August 23rd, 2005

L.A. Daily News - Business
Knowing how TV shows turned out is proving to be no turnoff for fans of the genre
By Greg Hernandez, Staff Writer

Boxed sets of sitcoms and dramas might be fueling DVD sales growth over the past year, but one popular television genre had largely been left out in the cold: reality television.

Everyone already knew that naked Richard Hatch won the first season of “Survivor” and that Trista picked Ryan on “The Bachelorette.” People also knew which houseguest outmaneuvered the others on “Big Brother.”

But the stepchild of the TV-DVD boom is finally coming into its own. “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy — The Fab Five Collection” was released Tuesday, and shows such as “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” “The Amazing Race” and subsequent seasons of “Survivor” are set to hit store shelves later this year.

“A lot of the studios were scared that when you don’t have a narrative, especially with these kinds of game show-type programs, that there might not be enough interest out there for people to buy it,” said Gord Lacey, president of the popular Web site TVShowsOnDVD.com. “But the assumption that people don’t want to have them on their shelves is wrong. Just like there are fans of ‘Charmed’ and ‘The OC,’ they want to own every episode of ‘Survivor.”‘

A ratings juggernaut for CBS, “Survivor” was the first reality series to appear on DVD when the entire first season was released last year, and it had strong sales. It was quickly followed by “Survivor Season 2: The Australian Outback” and “Survivor All Stars: The Complete First Season.” More… »

Hood River News

Brooke Struck
Hood River News

Yes, it?á?í?ôs true ?á?í?ì a young woman from Hood River will be appearing on the next CBS Survivor series, ?á?í?Survivor Guatemala, The Mayan Empire,?á?í? to begin airing Sept. 15.

Brooke Struck, a fifth-generation Hood River native, went to Guatemala to film the series right after her graduation from Pepperdine University in May.

?á?í?She?á?í?ôs very positive, very intelligent, and very good at problem solving,?á?í? said Sue Gay, Brooke?á?í?ôs mother. ?á?í?She?á?í?ôs physically strong ?á?í?ì a runner ?á?í?ì and mentally strong; not a real emotional, fall-apart kind of girl. And she?á?í?ôs got pioneer blood, so maybe these things will help her do well on the show.?á?í? More… »

Looks like they will try to have TWO twists this time. I don’t remember exactly what the twist was last time, unless it was Ian bailing out. Perhaps the picking of teams on the beach 3 days after they arrived? You tell me. What do you think the twists will be? Leave a comment.

The next Survivor will take you deep into the Guatemalan jungle.

Sixteen new castaways will face their toughest challenge right from the start. And if you’re expecting a big twist…there won’t be one…this time there will be two!

Female Voice: Oh my god!

And if we told you what they were we’d have to sacrifice you to the Mayan Gods.

Guatemala begins Thursday, September 15th only on CBS.

We Get Email…

August 20th, 2005

I live in Canada and would be a perfect candidate for the survivor series. Why can’t Canadians apply to be on the show??

Because they don’t know which web site to send the email to.

To whom and where should I send complete information regarding a most incredible and awesome location for a future Survivor

The email form says at the top, in big, bold letters:

NOTE: WE ARE NOT CBS OR MARK BURNETT
We don’t accept applications for the show

We can’t answer these kind of questions. Try posting in the forum. Maybe someone there knows. I’m sorry, but we are not connected with the show in any way and I doubt Mark Burnett would return my phone calls, even if I knew his phone number.

The Second Biggest Reality Star in the Room

August 16th, 2005

The Lex Files, by Lex Friedman
Saturday, July 23rd, 2005 @ 12:21 PM

Thursday, Lauren and I spent time at a friend’s home — Heather, whom Lauren works with. Heather, in fact, appeared in Lauren’s “Queer Eye for the Straight Girl” episode.

But that night at Heather’s house, Lauren wasn’t the biggest reality star in the room, as the subject of this post may have subtly hinted.

Colleen Haskell, one of the castaways on the very first season of Survivor, was another guest in attendance. Colleen, as far as I know, remains as the only person I have spoken to directly who has turned down a $100,000 offer from Playboy to appear nude in that magazine.

No one mentioned Colleen’s claim to fame (by which I mean her appearance on Survivor, not her star turn in the Rob Schneider vehicle “The Animal”). But the best part of the evening was when the conversation turned to TV’s “Lost.”

Read the article to see what happened next.
