Survivor 20 debuts; heroes and villains ranked + reality blurred

Survivor Heroes vs Villains

Tonight, Survivor Heroes vs. Villains debuts with a two-hour episode at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. What’s perhaps most amazing about the debut of the 20th season for me is that I’ve kept watching for 19 seasons. My short attention span and I lose interest in other shows, especially as they age and start to suck for various reasons. But while Survivor has had some so-so seasons, and occasionally starts off slowly, it’s never not been appointment TV for me.

Here are some other thoughts about the anniversary: In The Daily Beast, I consider why the series has survived and what it did for television. In Metro, I give a quick summary of each season and highlight what stands out to me. (That was surprisingly difficult for a few seasons.) And on msnbc.com, I make the case for why all-star seasons usually aren’t my favorite.

Having concluded my series of interviews with the cast, it’s now time to rank them. I’ve never liked predictions, because especially with a game like this, there are too many variables. And with this group especially, it seems more difficult than usual to predict how they’ll do, and how much I like or dislike them is clouded by more than just a half hour with them. (Some of my favorites are in the center of the pack below.)

Rupert Boneham: “I do not want to be that guy who thinks they’re any better than anyone else” + reality blurred

February 11th, 2010 | Posted in Heros vs Villains
Rupert Boneham

Rupert Boneham

Although he reminded me a few times that he’d won America’s vote, Rupert wasn’t delusional about who he is or what he’s done in the game. “Winning and losing isn’t as important as playing with honor, playing with heart. I was no damn angel. No one can say they did everything right, they didn’t lie or cheat. It’s okay. I played with at least some honor,” he said. He wants to do the same thing this time, by playing “hard and tough, not being any angel. Of course, I’m going to tell lies; there’s not a darn person out there in this world that doesn’t tell a lie. But still playing the game with honor, playing it with respect, being able to show people that it counts. And I hope that I get to do that. My big hope, though? Jeff Probst writing another million dollar check on my back. This one, I’d love to win it myself.”

Rupert recognizes he faces a challenge with his reputation. During All-Stars, the other contestants “didn’t know me, so it was easy for me to be quiet and just be a worker. Everybody knows me out here. I can’t be the quiet one out here. I am the out, in-your-face, tough, big, hairy, scary, help-you” person. Rupert said that, at charity events, “having them see that people line up for me and don’t even recognize them, there’s some jealously there.”

To counter that, Rupert said, “I want to make sure that everybody sees that I’m taking care of you. If I can do that, I can make it through the first few votes, I’m solid.” He said he’s good at “making you feel like I care, which I do—it’s not just an act, but in the game, I care a little more about myself than normally, and I will maneuver people if it helps me get further in the game.” Rupert will also make sure he doesn’t trust people too much. “My wife let me know as I was walking out the door, “Your one weakness is that you believe people, you believe in people, you want to show the best side of people, you want to help encourage that side. So in the game, try not to trust people. … That’s where my game will differ a little, because I won’t blindly trust anyone this time. I can’t.”

Courtney Yates: “No one is scared of me. … It’s like I don’t exist” + reality blurred

Courtney Yates

Courtney Yates

While she may not have any pre-game plans, she is aware of them. “I’ve got a secret weapon at home and he’s been prepping me,” she said, of course referring to Todd. “Nothing’s changed since China. Everyone spills all their beans to Todd Herzog and I have no idea why, he’s such a little weasel.” Courtney thinks the game could tip toward those pre-season alliances and friendships. “I think there’s going to be two schools of thought,” she said. “It’s either going to be about cliques and friends, or it’ll be about just the game, so it’s interesting to see which way it’s going to go.”

As to her physical game, Courtney said, “I actually think I’m in better shape than I was in China.” But she also joked about lack of preparation. “I live in New York City and my hair is platinum blonde. I can’t go in chlorine water. I’m at a disadvantage to all these California babes who go hang out at the beach all the time, so I’m pretty much screwed there. Hopefully, I can do some puzzles or something. Yay, Survivor puzzles.”

Courtney joked—I’d forgotten how funny she can be—about the size and physicality of her competitors. “If you look around, all these other people are twice my size and they’re big and scary,” she said, adding that her fellow Survivor China cast members “come up to everyone’s elbows,” and said, “If you see pictures of me Stephen, Todd, and Spencer, it’s like we’re their children. They [Stephen and Spencer] look like a lovely gay couple with two teenagers.”

Ben Wade: “If people want to hate me, at least they’re talking about me” + reality blurred

February 11th, 2010 | Posted in Heros vs Villains
Coach Wade

Coach Wade

Alas, I regret to inform you that’s what’s coming again: “I definitely want to create another memorable character, and I think, fortunately, I’ve come to grips with that as far as the negative reaction to the last one. I’ve really done a lot of thinking: are you going to be yourself, or are you going to be another character?” Ben added that “my favorite thing about last season was that I was a character, not the public reaction, but that I was a character, and people really had to talk about me because I was so there.”

However, his season 20 character will be different. “I will try to be a lot more contrite, a lot more humble. I think the creativity that comes with making up a Dragon Slayer, to take the Dragon Slayer from here and to come here with it, but have even more, make it bigger and better,” he said. “It’s going to be the Dragon Slayer, but it’s going to evolve into something different, and that different is hopefully going to be more, but at the same time be less. It’s going to be more of a character, the pieces have already been thought out in terms of alliance, nicknames, but this philosophy of this new character, who is historical, will be woven throughout. And it will be, at times, more chivalrous.”

Holy shit, really? I asked him why he insists on doing this, and I said, “This [non-character] version of you doesn’t make me want to throw something at my TV, so why provoke that reaction, why not just play as you?” Ben replied, “If I were just myself, like this, it would be like Joe [Dowdle]. You wouldn’t know who I was. He was a great guy.”

James Clement: “I’ve got to focus and do the whole social, networking, talking thing” + reality blurred

February 11th, 2010 | Posted in Heros vs Villains
James Clement

James Clement

Between China and Micronesia, James said, “I didn’t have enough time to assess what was going on.” For season 20, his strategy is to be “more socially aggressive. Network a whole lot more, not be so much the working guy,” and “do the talking thing, do the socializing way earlier than I have been. It’s by far the most important thing.” He doesn’t have pre-season alliances (“you’re not supposed to do that”) and said “to do that is to plan for failure,” but with his Micronesia allies also on this season, James said he will definitely approach them: “I need to secure things with them, but I’m also going to branch out.

At the same time, James said he will “still do my thing, still do the work thing, because I can’t help it. … I enjoy the survival aspect of it, but I need to win the money, so I’ve got to focus and do the whole social, networking, talking thing.” Overall, he said, “Yes, I will do what I do best, and make it seem as I’m just good ol’ James, just shuckin’ and jivin’ and getting food.”

Because it’s atypical for him to be social—“I’m a grave digger. I’m not that social. Most people I talk to don’t talk back,” James said—he’s prepared by trying to interact with people. “What I’ve been doing is doing the more social thing, walking up to people, doing the whole networking thing. That’s another reason I moved out [to Los Angeles], to be more social,” he said, and “get more confidence with people by my talk and more than with my actions, because most of the time, it does matter what you say.”

Colby Donaldson: “I’m just in a really good place now. I can control how much fun I have.” + reality blurred

February 11th, 2010 | Posted in Heros vs Villains
Colby Donaldson

Colby Donaldson

Clearly, his experience playing the game twice before, with nine years between the first and third times, had an impact. “I think that’s the one thing that’s absent this time is any sort of desperation,” Colby said. He appreciates the opportunity—he’s “humbled and honored” to be back because “so many people who send in applications that would hope and want and pray to play just once, and here I have the chance to go back for the triple”—and said, “I’m just in a really good place now. I can control how much fun I have. … I’m just tremendously looking forward to going over there and giving it hell.”

And that’s basically how he intends to play. “My strategy is simple: I’m going to go over there and have fun and stay positive,” Colby said. “I’ve been down this road, and it’s so hard to maintain a positive outlook and prevent any sort of negativity from coming inside you, which then is palpable to your tribemates and ultimately can get you kicked out. No one wants to be around someone who’s negative all the time; I certainly don’t.”

Colby expects that many of his fellow competitors won’t consider him a threat, so he’ll use that to his advantage. “Half these players don’t even know who I am, so I’m certainly not the biggest, strongest, fastest, or smartest player here, so I’m not longer the threat I once was,” he said. “Maybe I can cruise under the radar a little bit.”

Tyson Apostol: “I need to make sure everything’s strategic and nothing’s personal” + reality blurred

Tyson Apostol

Tyson Apostol

As a result, Tyson will play differently and be “more cutthroat. I got screwed last time by maybe not playing as hard as I could have at a certain point in the game, this time, I’m chopping everybody down. I hope I make every person cry, even the manly men,” he said, referring to them being voted out, not berating them like he did to Sierra. “I’m smart enough and personable enough that trying to convince somebody to vote a different way isn’t going to be that difficult,” which Tyson said he “didn’t do that last time, and I even thought about” it. “I need to prepare for Tribal Council like I’m being voted out,” he said.

However, he’s confident what worked for him last time will work again. “Pre-merge I’ll probably play pretty similar to what I did last time, which is, blast through the challenges, help my team win as many of them as I can, keep it on the down-low and don’t be confrontational with anybody if I can.” He said he wants to “win all the immunities all the way to the finale; that would be pretty sweet.”

Tyson’s not kidding about winning individual immunity, because in a non-joking way, said that he thinks he’s the strongest physically. “The physical competitors aren’t here, really. If I look at that group, I think I’m the strongest one here,” Tyson said. “I probably can’t bench press more than James, but I can run faster, swim faster, have more endurance, and I’m smarter at doing puzzles. That’s how I feel about most everybody. I don’t think there’s anybody that’s going to give me a real run for my money in any of the challenges.” Back to joking, he added, “I assume I’m one of the smartest people here.”

Who will be the ultimate ‘Survivor’ on ‘Heroes vs Villains’?

February 11th, 2010 | Posted in Heros vs Villains

The new season of “Heroes vs Villains” includes four past “Survivor” winners: JT Thomas, Tom Weston, Sandra Diaz and Parvati Shallow. However, never under estimate the power of the “under the radar” underdogs, like Sugar Kiper, Candice Woodstock and Courtney Yates. In the game of ultimate “Survivor” anything goes, especially during a new season of all-stars.

Here is a look at the teams, and how the players fared during their previous time on the island:

Heroes:
Rupert Boneham: 8th out and 2nd jury member: Pearl islands; 15th out and 6th jury member: All-Stars; winner of Fan Favorite award
James Clement: 10th out and 4th jury member: China: Injured, 4th jury member on Micronesia
Colby Donaldson: 1st runner-up: Australia; 5th out on All-Stars
Cirie Fields: 12th out and 6th jury member: Panama; 15th out and 7th jury member: Micronesia

‘Heroes vs Villains’ preview: Top 10 most memorable moments in ‘Survivor’ history (Video)

February 11th, 2010 | Posted in Heros vs Villains

With “Survivor: Heroes vs Villains” just hours away, die-hard fans are entertaining the thought of which “Hero” or “Villain” might be crowned “Sole Survivor” by game’s end.

In celebration of the upcoming 20th season of “Survivor,” let’s take a look back at the past 19 seasons to select the Top 10 Most Memorable Moments in “Survivor” History. It’s not an easy job–but someone’s gotta compile the list.

10) Osten becomes the first conestant to quit (Pearl Islands)

Osten’s decision to leave the game on his own terms forever branded him a quitter in many fans’ eyes. That seems to include host Jeff Probst himself, who chose not to snuff out Osten’s torch but instead simply laid it down. At the time, it was a shock to see a person give up on the game considering how much people sacrifice to simply be on the show. While Osten claims he was too weak to continue on in the game, many fans have permanently placed him in the Reality Hall of Shame.

9) Jenna and Heidi strip for peanut butter and chocolate (Amazon)

During an immunity challenge, host Jeff Probst tempted contestants Jenna and Heidi with a plate full of peanut butter and chocolate. Moments later, they were exiting the challenge nude and enjoying their tasty snacks. Jenna and Heidi’s “bare all” moment eventually led to a spread in Playboy, to the delight of men everywhere and the chagrin of the young ladies’ families.

Barney: Yau-Man Chan says women will rule ‘Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains’ – San Jose Mercury News

February 11th, 2010 | Posted in Heros vs Villains

At first, Chan, 57, was disappointed over missing another chance to compete. But after studying the male half of this season’s roster, which includes the likes of Rupert Boneham, James Clement and “Boston” Rob Mariano, he’s just fine with watching from the comfort of his couch.

“I look at that cast and it’s loaded with real power players — a lot of type-A personalities,” he says. “I don’t think I’d have any chance out there with those guys. I’m more of a subtle player, who relies on playing an intellectual game. I wouldn’t fit in with this group.”

Despite the presence of all those macho men, Chan has a hunch that the season will be ruled by women.

“If I had to put my money on anyone, it would be the really good flirty ones who know how to manipulate people — players like Parvati (Shallow), Candice (Woodcock), Amanda (Kimmel) and Sandra (Diaz-Twine),” he says. “I think the Alpha males will turn on each other and do themselves in.”
Chan has a soft spot, in particular, for Amanda, the former pageant queen who has come oh-so-close to the prize twice — finishing as the second runner-up in China and the runner-up in Micronesia.

“I’d love to see her win,” he says. “She’s such a good player. Plus she completely changed my prejudice against beauty queens. I always thought they’re just harebrained dingalings. But she’s a very thoughtful person with a good head on her shoulders.”

All-stars on ‘Survivor’ ultimately disappoint – Survivor- msnbc.com

February 11th, 2010 | Posted in Heros vs Villains

A different advantage
Perhaps most significantly, “Survivor” is a completely different game when contestants know each other. Besides the potential advantage that comes with being able to watch their competitors play the game (which, of course, is what athletes do all the time), “Survivor” all-stars have an entirely different kind of advantage.

That’s because many of them are already friends. Whether they met while playing during a previous season or at a charity event, they already have relationships, and a big part of the fun of “Survivor” is watching relationships form — and crumble when one person stabs the other in the back.

“Survivor” is a social and strategic game set in an extreme environment, and ever since Richard Hatch introduced the idea of aligning in small groups, alliances have been a huge part. But instead of forming organically, alliances in all-star seasons are sometimes established before it even starts. For example, in a pre-game interview, Sugar told me she has alliances with three men, and she even has a romantic relationship with one of those people.

None of that will end up on TV, so viewers will get a distorted perspective. And the real magic of “Survivor” is watching 16 or 18 (or even, in the more bloated seasons, 20) Americans be forced to create new relationships as they battle for $1 million.

Probst stays with ‘Survivor’ – Entertainment News, TV News, Media – Variety

Jeff Probst will remain host and exec producer of “Survivor” through May 2011.
CBS announced that Probst, who has been the only host of the reality juggernaut since in launched in 2000, will continue with the skein through its 21st and 22nd installments.

“Even in my wildest dreams, I couldn’t have predicted we’d still be going strong 10 years later,” said Probst, who has won two Emmys for his work as host of the reality competition series.

Jeff Probst signs on for two more ‘Survivor’ seasons

February 9th, 2010 | Posted in Survivor

After a decade and 20 seasons of the reality TV show Survivor, host Jeff Probst understandably considered moving on to other things. But fortunately for his fans, Probst is “not finished with Survivor yet,” and he will still be pulling hand-scrawled names out of a jar for seasons 21 and 22.

Probst is also hosting the special Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains season which will feature 20 returning cast members including Rupert Boneham and Russell Hantz, who just came of Season 20 as a formidable competitor. Hantz will be at a disadvantage this time around, however, as everyone is now on to his manipulative ways and he’ll have to develop a new strategy. Heroes vs. Villains premieres on February 11, 2010.

Because of this special season, Probst told People magazine that he thinks seasons 21 and 22 need to be “something special” and that producers need to be “on [their] game and get very creative.” He also said that a recent celebration of 10 years of the show helped cement his decision to return:

“It really hit me when I walked in to the party a month ago and saw the logos for the 20 seasons on the wall. That was a really great kick in the pants for me to say, ‘Don’t be embarrassed to be proud of what the team has accomplished.’ Twenty seasons is a lot of television. I am very much aware that I have one of the top 10 jobs on television. I get it.”

Orlando Sentinel – The TV Guy – ‘Survivor’: Jeff Probst to return as host next season

February 9th, 2010 | Posted in Survivor

A new cycle of “Survivor” starts this week, and before the big premiere, CBS is announcing that host Jeff Probst will return next season.

And what a relief. The show wouldn’t be the same without him. Probst won the Emmy as top host for a reality competition the past two years.

Probst tried something new with “Live for the Moment,” another reality show about seizing the day. But the pilot for that proposed series bombed in the ratings.

So he’ll lead the “Survivor” competitors through the 21st and 22nd editions of the show next season. Yes, 21 and 22. Where did the time go?

“Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains” debuts with two hours at 8 p.m. Thursday

Jeff Probst renews ‘Survivor’ contract – CNN.com

February 9th, 2010 | Posted in Survivor

Good news, Survivor fans: Jeff Probst, whose contract on the CBS hit reality show was expiring, has decided not to snuff his own torch…yet. The host tells EW.com he will be back on the show past the season’s 20th edition, “Heroes vs. Villains” (which kicks off Thursday night at 8pm).

“What has kept me interested in “Survivor” for 20 seasons is the study of human nature,” said Probst. “How we justify our ethics, and watching what happens to people when they are put in situations of extreme conflict. Sometimes it’s hard to watch, and sometimes it’s enjoyable to watch, but it is always interesting to watch.”

But, like any good “Survivor” story, this one has a twist. When Probst renewed his contract in the past (after seasons 12 and 16), it was for four cycles over two years. His latest renewal, however, covers only seasons 21 and 22 and will expire in 2011. While that would seem to indicate that the host is ready to finally call it quits and take his act elsewhere next spring, Probst insists that is not necessarily the case. “I’m not approaching this as my last year of Survivor,” says Probst. “I was just comfortable taking it one year at a time. It certainly made it easier for me to just commit to one year and then we can revisit it again next year if everybody wants to.”

‘Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains:’ more casting snubs and analysis

When asked at the 10th anniversary party why Johnny Fairplay wasn’t invited back Jeff Probst said point blank “It’s called Survivor Heroes and Villains, not Survivor Quitters.”

Jonny Fairplay: Fairplay was not asked. I Repeat: Fairplay was not asked.

Colleen Haskell: Finally, someone new! Jeff admitted that Colleen from the first season would have been on the show if she was interested, but quite frankly she wasn’t interested.

Ozzy Lusth: People generally either love or hate Ozzy; for Jeff, he said that people had probably seen enough of the guy for now.

Terry Deitz: Jeff said that Terry was considered but it came down to spots. However, I can tell you that Terry was never actually asked. He told me that last September.

Brian Heidik: Brian probably is one of the most sure-fire villains “Survivor” has ever seen, but the problem is that everyone is “repulsed” by the “Thailand” winner too much to see him back.

‘Survivor’: Jeff Probst talks about who didn’t make the cut for ‘Heroes vs. Villains’ — and why | EW.com

February 8th, 2010 | Posted in Heros vs Villains

65FE9147-D292-4E5A-B4ED-02458D4D99D8.jpg

There’s been a lot of debate as to why certain people made the cast of Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains. Of course, the other side of that is why certain people did not make the final cut. Why isn’t Panama’s Shane Powers on the Villains tribe? Or Thailand champ Brian Heidik? How can you have Heroes without Ozzy, Yul, Terry Deitz, and Mike Skupin? And did they even consider bringing back bad boy-turned-quitter Jonny Fairplay? We went straight to the source for the answers: Jeff Probst.
