‘Survivor: Samoa:’ Recap on Thanksgiving,
Finale on December 20

Recap on Thanksgiving, finale on December 20!

One of the biggest mysteries so far on “Survivor: Samoa” has actually been about the schedule. With the cast being 20 people this season, most everyone assumed that there would need to be one more episode containing a “double boot” or another injury couple with tribal council in order for the finale to be on December 13.

However, that does not seem to be the case. According to Jeff Probst himself, the “Survivor” finale has officially been pushed back to December 20. Why the reason for the delay? It actually has to do with the injury to Russell Swan. In most cases, both his episode and the one containing Liz’s boot would actually be contained in one week. Since Russell’s exit was so dramatic, though, CBS decided to change the rules a little.

Survivor starts casting for seasons 21 and 22, which would tape next summer + reality blurred

Here is the Survivor Application that everyone has been asking for.

The new Survivor Application for seasons 21 and 22 is available at http://www.cbs.com/casting/survivor/Application.pdf

Survivor is now casting for seasons 21 and 22, although it has not yet been officially renewed by CBS, nor has Jeff Probst announced whether or not he’s returning as host, since his contract expires at the end of season 20. However, it’s typical for the show to start casting before being officially renewed, and if the show is renewed, pre-production would likely begin in January.

‘Survivor: Samoa’ preview: Can Russell do it again? | EW.com

November 19th, 2009
If I had my druthers and could choose which weirdo to watch take over Survivor between Evil Russell and Ben Coach Wade from last season, I'd surely go for Russell.

If I had my druthers and could choose which weirdo to watch take over Survivor between Evil Russell and Ben Coach Wade from last season, I'd surely go for Russell.

I am not going to sit here and say that the hidden immunity idols have exactly been hard to find this season on Survivor: Samoa. Heck, at this rate producers may as well just start hurling them right at the contestants’ faces. But even without the complete lack of subtlety, what Russell has done so far in finding two hidden immunity idols with no clues is pretty damn impressive. But can he do it again? It’s certainly going to be a lot harder now, and for one simple reason — he’s no longer the only person looking.

Russell “ain’t finished playing just yet” as stubbornness leads to Tribal Council surprise + reality blurred

November 13th, 2009

by Andy Dehnart

Tribal Council on Survivor Samoa last night was one of those moments when I realize how amazing it is that Survivor continues to deliver such dramatic moments 19 seasons later. Despite the marketing, it certainly wasn’t the most dramatic Tribal Council, but it absolutely delivered, and the new heart-pounding music definitely helped ratchet up the tension.

Kelly Sharbaugh was voted out, blindsided by the Foa Foa alliance, which had Russell to thank for its continued survival. Without any clues, he found yet another hidden immunity idol after realizing that “it has to be near a landmark or something … it cannot be any other place,” he said. It was under a bridge: “No way. That easy,” he said when he found it. “That’s just the gift I have. This is why I was born,” he said. At least he’s humble. (Does someone need to get fired for their inability to hide immunity idols well, or is Russell just smarter than anyone else who’s played the game during the last three years?)

When Russell told Jaison, Jaison said, “You deserve this, man. You deserve this.” Hard to disagree.

Russell played the idol, saying, “I ain’t finished playing just yet,” and shocked the hell out of Foa Foa. (Side note: Probst provides some actual insight in his EW column, noting that he’s not asking for the idol because “this season the clues have all been secretive. So there is no way for me to be certain that everybody knows there is an idol in play. Therefore, I can never ask for them to play it at tribal council because I might be giving something away.” Probst added that they’re told pre-game that if they have an idol, they’re supposed to play it when he pauses before reading votes.)

‘Survivor’: Russell may be one of the best players in the game’s history | Show Tracker | Los Angeles Times

November 13th, 2009

I wasn’t shocked that Russell was crafty enough to assume the producers had planted another hidden immunity idol somewhere within the Aiga camp. But I was surprised he was able to track it down. I mean, how does he keep finding these things? Yes, as he himself said, oftentimes the idols are near or inside greater objects. But rolling himself across an entire bridge to spot the secret prize under some boards above a murky body of water? The guy must have excellent eyesight.

By the way — is anyone surprised that no one has tried to copy the smart move made by “Survivor” winner Bob during the season in Gabon? The schoolteacher made not one but two of his own false idols and tricked his team into believing they were real. How difficult can it be for the Samoa cast to find a piece of rope and a shell and call it an idol?

Anyway — it was so great to watch Russell find that second idol.

“I’m shaking,” he said, clasping the hidden treasure in his hand. “This might be worth 1 million dollars.”

His friends had some pretty good reactions as well: Shambo lopped a big wet one on Russell’s cheek, while Jaison grinned, “I’m really beginning to love him.”

Survivor: Samoa: Watching Natalie Grow Up

November 13th, 2009

9EEFB369-9B02-42E4-8563-1C86C48DEB42.jpg

Come to think of it. At the very beginning she was one of Russell’s “dumb blondes”, the people who he struck alliances with early on, only to eliminate when the deed is done, like Marisa. When she got eliminated, it felt Russell would kick her out soon, especially after having found more reliable allies in Mick and Jaison. The gender lines being drawn then on Foa Foa wasn’t helping, either. Liz was the most vocal of the females, and Natalie was just hanging on to her (or to Russell, although she was still dispensable). When Liz got voted off, Natalie’s demise seemed inevitable. What else could a naïve Southern belle do?

Maybe the merge did save her, but I still thought Galu would kick her out first. After all, they’re still undergoing a Foa Foa purge. If things went differently the guys would have banded together and Natalie would be left stranded, shivering, and willing to extinguish her flame. Maybe Natalie would’ve stuck with Russell, but he would’ve deemed her useless to him, especially since he would have other alliances to explore. Whatever the case is, I always thought she would go and I wouldn’t care much about it.

Well, scratch that.

Survivor: Samoa – Exclusive Interview with Kelly Sharbaugh : RealityWanted.com

November 13th, 2009

BC9266A8-0A1D-4A92-907C-5DB97A3B7AC4.jpg

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Were you on board to vote Erik out first at the merge?
A. Kelly: We were all initially Foa Foa. We wanted to split the vote because Russell had the idol. Five minutes before, someone was going around saying Monica or Laura needed to go home. Then, we realized it was Erik and I saw Erik propositioning Foa Foa and I asked him what was going on. He told me I was on a need to know basis and unfortunately, we just all ran out of time before Erik could finalize everything. I guess we thought that he was against our own tribe.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What happened between the conversation on the Galu beach and tribal council that changed your plan from splitting the votes to everyone writing Russell’s name down?
A. Kelly: The day I was sent home, we spent the whole day napping on the beach. There wasn’t too much strategizing. We didn’t realize Russell had the idol but little did we know…

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: In your mind, if Russell was going to play the idol and blindside someone, did you ever think it would be you? The look of shock on your face was pretty clear.
A. Kelly: No, I really didn’t because I knew it would be a girl because he said, “I’m not done playing yet, ladies,” but I thought it would be Monica. Monica was Laura’s main ally. I didn’t step on anybody’s toes. I didn’t think it would be me.

Television – News – ‘Survivor Samoa’: Episode 9 recap – Digital Spy

November 13th, 2009

B95252D3-EA43-4079-96DD-3829A1E5F035.jpg

Shambo tells the camera that since Laura won the challenge, her “heart is broken”. Russell lets Jaison know that he has a second idol and lets him know the plan is to vote Kelly. Jaison passes the plan on to Natalie and Mick telling them they have to focus all their efforts on convincing Galu to vote for Russell. Jaison points out: “It’s got to be Russell tonight or we’re all through.”

On the beach, the former members of Galu are working on an order of elimination for Foa Foa. Monica asks whether they should be planning for if one of them has found the idol – “if we all vote for Russell and he has the idol again the other person goes home and it’s one of us”. Dave tells her they can’t worry about that but John is less sure, remembering that he found the first idol without any clues. Russell H hears them saying Natalie’s name and starts to wonder whether he should play his idol at Tribal Council after all.

At Tribal Council, Foa Foa play up their vulnerability and naiveté. “I’m just trying to hold on to some hope,” sighs Jaison, while Russell tells Jeff: “We’re hoping that someone comes to us… but they seem to be pretty tight.” Galu appear confident in their closeness as a group. Dave reveals that Galu reach a communal decision with their elimination votes, saying: “We try to come to a consensus so everybody feels heard.”

Survivor 19: Samtasteslikechickenoa – Week 9 – Uncommon Sportsman

November 13th, 2009

EAC37588-D170-443B-8707-E8791E05CF13.jpg

The next morning, Natalie is overcome by hunger and kills a small rodent. She’s even sick enough to ask it how it wants to die first, by stick or by rock. Then she cackles and says, “Just kidding, you don’t get to pick,” before smashing its head. She brings it back to camp and all the men’s torches are lit because she’s a hunter now. Marriage tip from Uncommon Survivor: Husbands, starve your wives. They’ll get so hungry they’ll kill household vermin in a bikini and you’ll see a whole new attractiveness to them at the same time.

Tree Mail Time! Something about a digital display and a reward feast. Russell is already looking for another hidden idol. He’s just crazy enough to find it, too.

Reward Challenge time! Collect a series of poles with coconuts on them and arrange them to find a four digit number, then have a blind-folded person Braille it out on a combination lock. The reward is a water slide and a feast. I wonder if that girl from Amazing Race is watching this. Since the game is 5 on 5, and there’s 11 people, Natalie is left out. She gets to choose which horse to hitch her wagon to, and she chooses Yellow, which includes Russell and Jaison, former tribemates of hers. I also hate to say it, but they’re losers in challenges.

News Tribune – Cindy’s Scoop on ‘Survivor’

November 13th, 2009

Who went home: Ahh, we knew her so little – Kelly Sharbaugh, 25, a hairstylist from Los Angeles became a victim of her alliance with Laura, a seemingly skilled at challenges Laura. We didn’t know Kelly very well. She definitely was flying under the radar.

Who won immunity? Laura Morett, 39, a fitness instructor and lobby message center office manager, from Salem, Ore. She’s been married 21 years and is a grandmother of a 2 year old. She was able to come out ahead in a puzzle-solving challenge. She really came from behind to beat Mick and Shambo.

Who should have gone: Laura. She was set to be eliminated by the Foa Foa alliance after Russell found the new hidden immunity idol. Since Galu was most likely to vote for Russell, all they had to do was decide who they wanted to go since he would play the new idol.

Jeff Probst blogs ‘Survivor: Samoa’: episode 9 | EW.com

November 12th, 2009

7F9E0DE1-F0C7-497A-AB71-B6DA82C0BF6F.jpg

I KILLED SOMETHING Y’ALL
Little ole Natalie is really coming of age out in Samoa.

Natalie killing the rat is one of my favorites moments of all time.

It’s wrong on so many levels but never ever fails to make me stop what I am doing and watch.

If you pitched this as the opening scene to a new Wes Craven horror movie, you’d sell the idea in the room:

Extremely attractive twenty-something blonde wearing a skimpy golden-roped string bikini is wandering through the woods alone. Tired. Scared. Reallllly hungry. She encounters a rat scrounging for food. So as not to alert the rat or mess up her pedicure, she tip toes through the jungle inching closer and closer to her prey. Silently picking up a large stick she hammers the rat to death with one strong blow.

Natalie: “It was really hard for me because he was looking at me.. he was cute… but I’ve never been this hungry in my entire life.”

Therein lies one of the most beautiful things about Survivor. If forces people to confront truths about themselves they might otherwise never have to face. Think about what you witnessed. A pretty little pharmaceutical sales rep walking barefoot thru the jungle, in a bikini, whacking a rat until it’s dead. That’s not normal behavior.

I believe it was difficult for Natalie to kill the rat and I also believe she never second- guessed it. She had never been so h-u-n-g-r-y in her entire life. Who knows how far she would have gone for a burger.

YES, that will most definitely be a part of the live Survivor: Samoa Reunion show on CBS Sunday, December 20th in Los Angeles.

‘Survivor: Samoa’ recap: Lightning strikes twice | EW.com

November 12th, 2009

3CE68759-8024-4659-8EA6-04F9F0E77CD1.jpg

Well, guess what? Now, after ditching Erik, ostracizing Shambo, and allowing Russell to find a second hidden immunity idol with no clues — we are looking at a 5-5 deadlock. Nineteen seasons in and people still cannot grasp the fundamentals of the game. I love it.

And those of you who hate Russell — and lord knows you have your reasons what with his silly hat, grandstanding, and wicked words about women — you had to kinda love it as well. Why? For two reasons.

(1) He’s playing the game! He found two idols with no clues. Now, don’t get me wrong, producers make it so easy to find these damn things, you could practically stumble into them (as Parvati claims she did in Micronesia). But still, he was the only one smart enough to look. The one thing true hardcore Survivor fans want are contestants who would kill to be there and will scrape, fight, and claw to stay in the game. Well, in Samoa, that contestant is Russell. If you respect nothing else about him, respect the effort.

(2) He’s now the underdog. Everyone loves the underdog. As the biggest target of a tribe that was down four members, every week he sticks around is flat-out incredible. And whether it is deserved or not — nice, happy, friendly Galu have now been cast in the role of entitled bullies. What’s more fun to watch: Galu picking off their helpless underlings one by one, or the seemingly outmatched minority fighting back? You know my answer.

So to all you hardcore Russell haters out there, admit it: When he stood up as the votes were about to be read, and Dave’s mouth fell open and Erik started punching the air with his fists, and Russell calmly and coolly looked at the Galu members and said, “I ain’t finished playin’ just yet” — you were totally into it. You can go back to wanting him eradicated from existence next week, but this? It was pretty sweet. So sweet that I wasn’t even that upset that it meant the hottest girl on the show (Kelly) was no longer.

Of course, we knew Russell was not going home from the previews last week showing everyone talking about voting him out. Our suspicions were confirmed two minutes into the episode when Laura boldly proclaimed, “Russell is going to be gone next” — always a sure sign that the intended target will slip by unscathed. But not everyone was as lucky as Russell. I’m speaking, of course, about the rat Natalie pummeled into submission with her big stick. Honestly, I didn’t know Natalie had it in her, although it would have been a bit more badass had she not then apologized to the rat after killing it.

‘Survivor: Samoa’: Russell is my hero – Zap2it

November 12th, 2009

282DB485-38CA-42A9-8E81-CCB1B7FCD5D8.jpg

Interestingly, Monica posits that they should plan for if one of FF has another Idol, like split their votes between two. That still wouldn’t make a difference, though, because even if Shambo is with them (which she’s not) but even if she was, that’d be 4 votes for, say, Russell, 3 votes for, say, Jaison and then 4 votes for Kelly and since Russell’s are negated, Kelly is gone. Do the math, Galu.

Hilariously, Danger Dave totally shoots her down, saying they don’t have to worry about that now. Russell overhears them talking about Natalie a little and gets worried. Jaison advises Russell to ensure it’s him. But Russell is conflicted on what to do with the Idol.

Oh man, once AGAIN I am so pumped/nervous for tribal.

Tribal Council
Jeff asks them if tribal lines are gone since everyone voted out Erik. Dave says that their tribe was weakened from within by Erik’s presence and Erik balls a fist, like he wants to punch Dave. Yeah, me too, Erik.

The Foa Foa people really talk up how tight Galu is and the Galuans talk about how strong they are and how there’s no hope for Foa Foa. Oh man, these guys are SO COCKY! GET ‘EM, FOA FOA! I really hope that Natalie talk was misdirection.

Blog Cabins: Movie Reviews and Commentary Made Fun: Survivor: Samoa Episode 9 Recap/Live Blog

November 12th, 2009

DC18A113-B97F-475F-9284-F0B462834BA6.jpg

7:19: Hi, Kelly. Nice to meet you. Welcome to the game of Survivor.

7:20: Here’s your top secret reward clue for the re-hidden immunity idol: there is an immunity idol somewhere at your camp. You know, just like there was last time. And it’s hidden, just like it always is. Your clue is information that you’d be a dolt for not knowing in the first place. Congratulations!

7:22: Will Russell find a second idol without a single clue?

7:22: Of course, just as I’m typing that, he finds it. What a f*cking awesome son of a b*tch! (Sorry, but that was just awesome.) What the hell is wrong with all of the other players in this game? Remember how I (jokingly) called the producers of the show savvy? I take it back, I take it all back. They are now idiots for having not thought as intelligently as one of their own players. There’s only one of him and god knows how many people working behind the scenes with input on such matters, and yet this one player knows how predictable they will be and finds a 2nd idol sans clues. Sharpen up, people!

Survivor Samoa Episode 9 – Review of “Tastes Like Chicken” – wibw.com

November 12th, 2009

Russell with his driven personality decided that he would find the re-hidden immunity idol AGAIN without a clue! He said that he didn’t plan on telling anyone if he found it… Well what do you know… HE FINDS IT AGAIN WITHOUT A CLUE! Amazing!

One problem with Russell though is that he can’t keep a secret! He decided to tell Shambo since she has realigned herself with the old Foa Foa. Their plan became to let Galu vote for Russell, play the idol and have all of the old Foa Foa members vote for Laura to get rid of her.

At the immunity idol challenge only one necklace was up for grabs. The castaways had to use a grappling hood to retrieve two bags containing puzzle pegs. The first three to retrieve their bags would move on to the final round, where they would place pegs on a board. First person to get all the pegs in the right spots would win individual immunity! Shambo got the first bag. Mick and Kelly then got their first bags. Brett followed quickly. Mick was the first person to get both bags. Jaison got his first bag, and then so does Laura. Russell did too. Shambo was the second person to qualify for the final round. Russell and Laura were in a very close race to get their final bag, and Laura won it to move on. Laura, Mick, and Shambo competed in the puzzle portion of the challenge. For Laura, opening the bags seemed to be the hardest part of the challenge. Shambo got a bunch of pieces in and took the lead. It’s not long, however, before Laura started to run away with the challenge, as the others for some reason seem quite stumped. Laura WON immunity!

Survivor Samoa Recap November 12, 2009 – tvgrapevine.com

November 12th, 2009

The tribe gathers for tribal council and Eric as first member of the Srvivor Samoa jury joins them. Jeff asks Dave about tribal lines. Dave says that their tribe was weakened from within and taking out Eric was a way to strengthen their tribe. Natalie says that she feels they are welcoming them and they aren’t being mean or ugly to them. Jeff points out that they are not one tribe. Jaison says that he is holding onto some hope. Shambo feels that the original Galu is feeling comfortable. Mick says that their days might be numbered if Galu doesn’t realize that they are good strong votes. Russell says that he was trying to find the chink, but he has given up on that. Dave feels that physical ability, mental toughness, and strategic acuity is a reason to take someone out.

Jeff calls for the vote.
Jeff calls for the hidden immunity idol and Russell says that he is not finished playing just yet and presents it. Jeff announces that if it is played, any votes cast against that person will not count and the next highest vote getter goes home.

The votes:
Russell, Russell, Russell, Russell, Russell, Russell, Russell, Kelly, Kelly, Kelly. Since Russell’s votes don’t count, Kelly goes home. Laura whispers that Russell has stirred up one hell of a nest. Russell knuckle shakes with Jaison. Foa Foa has survived the vote. Jeff asks if Foa Foa has survived or merely delayed the inevitable? He informs them that the immunity idol will go back into play again.

Kelly’s last words:
Kelly was blindsided and feels that Galu must get the immunity idol out of Russell’s hands. She wonders if anyone from Galu was in on it. She says that Russell is a sneaky little man.

Next week on Survivor Samoa:
It is a showdown between Russell and Laura. Finding the next idol means everything and when Russell takes off to look for it Galu follows him.

Kelly was eliminated from ‘Survivor: Samoa’ on the week nine episode, Nov. 12, 2009. The elimination came as quite a shock to the former Galu tribe members, who thought they had back dooring Russell in the bag. They had no fear going in to tribal council because Russell had played his hidden immunity idol the night before. Unfortunately for the old Galu, Russell had found the a second hidden immunity idol without a clue. He played it right before the votes were read, which canceled out all but four votes – Russell, Mick, Jaison and Natalie – and led to Kelly being voted out.
