Duhm, a student at the University of Florida in Gainesville, was 19 when the show filmed. He was the last player added to the cast.

“I was officially the male alternate if they needed to replace somebody,” Duhm said. “One of the other males couldn’t start. It was very, very shortly before we started. There was not a whole lot of warning.”

Producers didn’t tell him why, and the reason didn’t matter.

“I was given the opportunity,” he said. “I didn’t care.”

Duhm had been a “Survivor” fan since the show’s start.

“Season three hooked me; Africa hooked me,” he said. “I’ve been mildly obsessed with the show ever since.”

His favorite players are Rob Cesternino in the Amazon and Todd Herzog, winner of the China edition, because they were strategic players. Duhm’s favorite edition was the Amazon, for the twists and turns after the merger.
