‘Survivor: Tocantins’ Castaway Says He Should’ve Joined “Years Ago”

So Ben’s the token Christian this season. I didn’t realize that until I read it on Buddy TV.

I’m a Christian and we generally get portrayed pretty badly in the media. We’re not all judgmental, closed minded, heartless, arrogant jerks. Some of us are actually very nice and intelligent.

I’m looking forward to Ben making me proud out there. Jeff’s comment about Ben being “full of himself, like Richard Hatch” worries me a bit. He said “I wouldn’t want him to date my sister, but I love him on the show.”

What do you think of Christians on the show? What are your beliefs? Leave a comment below or take it over to the forum.

But, apparently, he almost didn’t make it.  He was confident—very confident, even—that he’d make it to Survivor, but when CBS finally made the call, he turned them down.  “The soccer team was doing really well this year and I would have had to leave before the season was over and I was not going to that,” he said.  “I wasn’t settled with my decision so I talked to my supervisor and he told me to pray about it so I called CBS back and said yes.  They gave me a hard time, but I told them I was a man of my word. It was like a millstone taken off my neck.”

So how will he do?  He says he played the game the same way his American Indian ancestors would’ve.  His game play is also inspired by the Vikings and their idea of heaven: “The bottom level is for those who lived a long life and the top level is for those who met a worthy competitor on the battlefield,” he explained.  “I never lie.  I have integrity.  I am a strong Christian.”

Whether he’ll be successful or not remains to be seen when Survivor: Tocantins premieres on February 12.  Maybe he’ll overwhelm, maybe he’ll be cocky, maybe he’ll be as good as he claims to be.  Well, that’s still up in the air.

When does this year’s Survivor series begin?
I had thought it was tonight 1/22/09 but the listing in the newspaper does not reflect such.

I think Survivor spreads the jerk wealth quite evenly - especially last season. I don’t harbor any ill will towards Christians based on what I’ve seen on Survivor. As a matter of fact, I really liked the older Christian woman (has her own radio show?) from Survivor China.

I’ve been fairly disappointed with some of the more vocally Christian people on the show. I think that some stereotypes have, unfortunately, been reinforced by people being judgmental, and holier-than-thou. Others have seemed to be of the mind that God will for some reason be on their side and help them win a million dollars. Not a big fan of that mixed up theology.

I’d like to see some Christians on Survivor show more humility and acceptance and kindness to show what a christian is supposed to look like.
