Benjamin "Coach" Wade, a soccer coach from Bolivar, MO

Benjamin Wade, 37, soccer coach/part-time orchestra conductor from Bolivar, Mo.

“I’m in this game because I want to change it,” says Wade, who kayaked 6.132 miles from Baja, California, to Colombia-alone. “it’s become survival of the weakest. I want the strongest to survive. I want to team up with worthy opponents. May the best man or woman win.

Benjamin Wade is known by many names. As the head women’s soccer coach at the Southwest Baptist University in Missouri, he is called “Coach Wade,” but he also goes by “Maestro” due to role as an artistic director and conductor of a California symphony orchestra. A skilled musician, Benjamin was traveling the world playing the trumpet before most kids could even spell “trumpet.”

Wade sees coaching as another form of manipulation. “You have to find out what everybody wants, what everybody needs, what they think they want, what think they need and then you have to be the person that solves everything.” He knows these skills will be valuable in the game of SURVIVOR.

If Benjamin was asked to wear just one hat, it would be that of “Renaissance Man.” Aside from setting the world record for the longest solo kayak expedition on the ocean (an amazing 6,132 miles), Wade has also been attacked by a tiger shark, stalked by a jaguar in the Amazon and has been bitten by a piranha on his right hand. To say that he is a Type A, Alpha male, who likes to control the environment around him may just be an understatement. Coach’s dominant personality will be a force to be reckoned with in the game.

Benjamin is single and currently splits his time in Bolivar, Mo, and Susanville, Calif.

What type of coach leaves his college team during their season? Only one that is concerned with his self promotion! Loser.

First off…”Curious”…the taping of this series was supposedly sometime in October to mid-December 2008…and seems how here in MO it’s cold…and the SBU team play strictly outdoors…I’d be safe in saying that the team was not in the middle of their season. I for one will be rooting for a fellow Bolivarite…Go coach!

Hey SBU Alum, I am not sure, but I think college soccer plays matches into November. Your confirmation of the filming dates and Coach Wade’s comments on other survivor websites prove he did leave his team in-season. Guess you really pay attention to your own university’s athletics. Seems like the perfect contestant….wonder what he told his team since contestants aren’t suppose to let people know where they are headed.

To help curious out with thier responce, yes soccer does go into November. But only if the team is actually good. SBU has only made one post season tournament and it wasn’t with “Coach” Wade. So it is safe to say that thier season ended early and he could have actually taped the show without leaving his team.

“I’m in the middle of the soccer season right now. I left a team that was ranked and had a great shot at getting to nationals—best start in that school’s history, and I left that team to come here. My team is in shambles right now; they probably won’t make the tournament,”
