Randy’s idol gaffe draws smiles on Survivor: Gabon - It Happened Last Night - Zap2it

Randy’s idol gaffe draws smiles on Survivor: Gabon - It Happened Last Night - Zap2it

Now this is interesting, kids. We know who everyone’s voting for, we know Randy’s going to play the fake idol, and we know he’s really going home. We know everything about what’s going to happen at tribal – and still it’s exciting! Sugar and Crystal’s addresses to the voting booth camera are particularly rewarding. In a Survivor first, Crystal forgoes the traditional whispering and shouts her comments at the camera, letting Randy and the entire tribe know what she thinks of him. Sugar can barely contain herself.

As suspected, Randy plays the idol, and the moment is more than the tribe can take. Both alliances are sporting huge grins as Jeff is informs the group that what Randy has given him is not, indeed, an immunity idol. Randy’s face drops, Sugar and Crystal bust a gut, and Corinne’s smile vanishes. Interestingly, Bob looks a little sad after the revelation. Randy is voted off, and his torch is snuffed.

Very interesting to see that Bob chose Corinne to share this information with.

That was the best ending to a regular episode of Survivor that I’ve seen in a long time, and this season has officially turned around for me. Hip hip hooray for the merge - as I’d hoped, it brought the schemers head to head. I’ve been on the fence about Sugar for a while, but after tonight I’m convinced – she’s for real. She’s a power player in Ken’s alliance, and has a budding alliance of her own forming with Bob. For these reasons, she’s my early favorite for final two. And regarding the teaser for next week – bring on more immunity idol hijinks! Very interesting to see that Bob chose Corinne to share this information with. Was he experiencing seller’s remorse after fooling Randy tonight?  Should the story about the supposedly lost idol prove to be true, is this part of a plan on Sugar’s behalf to form an alliance to take down Kenny’s five and get herself into the final four? If Bob can bring in Corinne with his idol story (let’s face it, she’s got no better option,) and Sugar can either seduce Kenny away from his own alliance or bring Matty over (he seemed willing enough to side with Bob and Corinne earlier tonight), then Sugar will have made the move that I was hoping she might last recap. Either way, this season promises to be interesting from here on out!

I think I\'m losing my edge. Going soft.

I think I'm losing my edge. Going soft.

Jeff Probst blogs ‘Survivor: Gabon’ (episode 10) | PopWatch Blog | EW.com by Jeff Probst

After tonight’s episode ended, I called Doc Horowitz and said, “I gotta get in to see you. I think something is wrong with me. I think I’m losing my edge. Going soft. Can you run a test or something, see what’s what?”

He asked me for my symptoms.

I said, “I felt badly for Randy getting played at tribal council like a banjo at a small town country fair. (Yes, I know, bad analogy and small town and country fair are probably redundant.)

I felt badly for Randy getting played at tribal council like a banjo at a small town country fair.

I felt badly for Randy getting played at tribal council like a banjo at a small town country fair.

Recognizing the severity of my condition, he immediately cancelled his morning appointments to squeeze me in. I’m waiting on the results.

In the meantime, I try to make sense of it all. Randy is a bitter man with a ton of enemies, and he had this coming like a kid who sticks a fork in a toaster. (Was that one any better?) He deserved what he got like Survivor deserves an Emmy.

So why did I feel bad? Maybe there is just something about Randy that I can relate to and sympathize with. Oh, he will hate me saying it like that.

My friend Serena thinks the answer lies with Sugar and the way she handled herself as I read the votes. “Not cool.” (I think she might be right. Serena is almost always right.) That uncontrollable laugh that came from such a deep place inside Sugar was so uncomfortable that I almost wanted to pull the votes out, rearrange them, rewind the tape, and vote Sugar out. Ah, but that’s just me. Me and Serena that is…Me and Serena sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g.

I will say this - it was brilliantly played from top to bottom, and I do appreciate that level of execution. Bob deserves major credit. He built an amazing fake idol, and he played both Corinne and Randy so well.

Bob deserves major credit.

Bob deserves major credit.

Didn’t rush it, wasn’t pushy. He was subtle. Subtle like the feather of an eagle falling softly to the ground. (Worse?)

Corinne on the other hand is equally as mean as Randy but I don’t find myself rooting for her in any way. She is an original. I will give her that. Not sure we’ve ever had anybody on the show quite like Corinne. Corinne is as subtle as a thunderstorm. Subtle as the look I give a Survivor when they want to quit. Subtle as, I know, a Probst analogy.

Survivor: Gabon Episode 10 - dingorue.com

By a vote of 4-3, Randy has been voted off the island.

By a vote of 4-3, Randy has been voted off the island.

Survivor: Gabon Episode 10

Bob tells Sugar he doesn’t have the idol. She suggests he should vote against Randy to save face. Then she decides Bob should give the hidden idol to Randy because she wants a laugh. Corinne approaches him, and he says he did find the idol. As agreed, he’ll give the fake idol to Randy. Looks like an idol to him. Looks like an idol to me, too.

The cookie issue comes up again in tribal council. Not just comes up but becomes the entire focus of the tribal council. Not quite as petty as two cherries, but petty nonetheless. Randy says he will not be okay with leaving (and no doubt will be bitter…er) if it’s him tonight.

Although the outcome is a foregone conclusion, the voting speeches prove entertaining. Sugar says Randy is a disgusting, old, hot headed, chauvanistic, alcoholic bigot who needs to grow up before he dies alone. Randy says his vote is not strategy but entirely personal, which is always the wrong kind of vote. Crystal is more loudly obnoxious than usual, so loud in fact that everybody can hear her. Unlike Sugar’s diatribe, she’s not saying it with a smile on her face. Somebody needs some anger management.

Randy plays his fake idol. The others can barely contain themselves from laughing.

By a vote of 4-3, Randy has been voted off the island. For some reason, Bob gave Randy a fake idol, but then didn’t vote against him. The bridge is a little too burned for him to not vote with the majority here.

‘Survivor: Gabon’ recap: Shifting alliances | Survivor | 1 | TV Recaps | EW.com By Dalton Ross

First Bob tells Sugar about his fake immunity idol, and then he turns around and tricks a smug Randy into an embarrassing exit

Bob\'s fake immunity idol looked real enough to fool Randy

IDOL THREAT: Bob’s fake immunity idol looked real enough to fool Randy, but what will Randy’s revenge look like?

\'M ON A MISSION TO SEE IF I CAN TYPE AS LOUD AS CRYSTAL TALKED WHILE CASTING HER VOTE AT TRIBAL COUNCIL.

I'M ON A MISSION TO SEE IF I CAN TYPE AS LOUD AS CRYSTAL TALKED WHILE CASTING HER VOTE AT TRIBAL COUNCIL.

HEY, EVERYONE. WELCOME BACK TO THE SURVIVOR TV WATCH! I HOPE YOU DON’T MIND THE ALL-CAPS, BUT I’M ON A MISSION TO SEE IF I CAN TYPE AS LOUD AS CRYSTAL TALKED WHILE CASTING HER VOTE AT TRIBAL COUNCIL. I UNDERSTAND IT MAY BE A LITTLE DISTRACTING AT FIRST, BUT I’M SURE YOU’LL GET USED TO IT IN A FEW PARAGRAPHS OR SO. WHAT’S THAT? THIS IS MAKING YOU WANT TO STEAL ALL MY COOKIES AND THEN STUFF ME IN A COOKIE JAR AND PLAY SKEET SHOOTING WITH THE JAR, THEREBY BLOWING ME TO SMITHEREENS? Fine, I’ll stop. Happy?

But then allow me to start by saying this: As someone who firmly believes that the less you know going into an episode, the more you will enjoy it, I absolutely, positively hated, hated, hated the new fangled “Previously on Survivor” recap. By eschewing the traditional here’s-what-happened-in-the-exact-order-it- happened recap format for one that placed so much emphasis on Bob’s fake hidden immunity idol, the intro was basically screaming at us what to expect, which can’t help but lessen the shock when it actually did. Sorry, it’s just a pet peeve of mine: Don’t expect me to be surprised when you’ve already ruined the surprise for me! And this goes for the “next week on Survivor” as well. Why show us Bob explaining that Marcus had secretly pocketed the other immunity idol that he pretended to toss out to sea? Sure, the hope is that it gets people interested enough to come back and watch the episode. But guess what, Survivor fans are going to come back to watch the episode no matter what you show. You could preview me discussing the highs (Bloodsport, Cyborg) and lows (Double Team, Kickboxer) of the Jean-Claude Van Damme filmography and people would still come back to watch the damn show. (By the way, JCVD + Celebrity Survivor = GOLD!] Plus, now by the time we actually see it happen in the episode (whether Bob is telling the truth or if it’s all just a ruse) it will only pack about one-tenth of the punch. Okay, rant over. Thanks for indulging.

It’s better to burn out than fade away Neil Young once opined, and burn, baby, burn certainly became Randy’s modus operandi. The guy who kept his temper and disdain in check for the first few weeks finally lost it. In fact, the episode began with Randy and Corinne arguing as to who hated the rest of the tribe more. We’d soon have our answer to that one once the players were summoned to the Survivor auction.

Survivor: Nothing Tastes Better Than 500 Dollars - TV Squad

Survivor: Nothing Tastes Better Than 500 Dollars - TV Squad by Jackie Schnoop

This is going to be the funkiest night of your life. Wait for it. Wait for it. - Sugar

This is going to be the funkiest night of your life. Wait for it. Wait for it. - Sugar

All in all, I found tonight’s Survivor episode one of the most satisfying ones to date. And, that’s talking a lot of episodes since I’m talking starting from the first season. Since I watch and write about so many reality television shows, I usually try to step back a bit and not get really involved in whom I want for the win or the folks I emphatically want booted sooner rather than later. That way I’m neither disappointed, nor do I personally jinx things. But I couldn’t have planned tonight’s episode any better than it went down. Read on!

When bad Randys go even worse
I don’t like Randy. I haven’t liked him since the season premiere. He’s annoying, a bully, nasty, and I don’t know why anyone would want him as their wedding photographer either! So, when his plan was to behave even worse tonight, I didn’t think it was possible. Oh, but he did it. We’ve seen the “act bad so they’ll vote me off” ploy used on other reality shows before with the ultimate goal not to be voted off. But Randy was so certain that Bob had the hidden idol from Exile Island that his plan was to stay while making buffoons of all of those castaways he despises so much. Well, he’s the buffoon indeed. But I knew that all along.

I’m liking the Sugar-Bob quasi-alliance
Sugar is shaping up to be my favorite castaway this season. It’s like she’s naive about playing the game, yet truly very aware of gameplay and reads people well. Bob is my sentimental favorite as he’s just such a cool guy with his now dirty bow-tie and all. He’d be such a longshot for the win, but I think he might have a chance in the finals now that he’s hooked up (not in that manner!) with Sugar. He also reads people well and I think he knows that the inherent evilness from Corinne and Randy won’t help him in the game unless he’s in the final three with them — and that’s just not likely.

‘Survivor’ gets personal as season nears end - Survivor- msnbc.com By Andy Dehnart

Some contestants toss strategy in the ocean, instead seek vengeance

It’s been quite the crazy season on “Survivor Gabon.”

This vote is not strategic. It\'s strictly personal.

This vote is not strategic. It's strictly personal.

As Randy voted for Susie during the 11th “Survivor Gabon” Tribal Council, he said, “This vote is not strategic. It’s strictly personal.”

With that, he summed up where the game has gone this season: instead of being about strategy, it’s gotten personal.

Randy wasn’t alone in making such a decision. Voting against Randy, who ultimately went home, pin-up model Sugar said, “You are a disgusting, old, hot-headed, chauvinistic, alcoholic bigot, and you need to grow up before you die alone.” As if her feelings weren’t illustrated by that statement, she made an L-shape with her hand and added, “loser.”

Olympic gold medalist Crystal, who should something about good sportsmanship, made sure Randy and everyone else heard her rationale for voting off Randy, marking the first time in the game anyone has essentially broadcast their vote to the other players. “You have made my life hell from day one. Forget you, go home, goodbye,” she said.
